Vantage Points Collective Redefines Distance and Connection

Port Ewen, NY – The third group exhibition from Vantage Points, Delicate Proximities, brings together twelve artists from across the world to negotiate spatial, material, and cognitive boundaries. Running through December 15th, the exhibition features a range of media including sculpture, painting, photography, and multimedia installations.

Delicate Proximities reflects how artists in the post-pandemic are harnessing the agility of online space to reconfigure distance, using technology to maintain intimacy, build community, and establish networks across borders, oceans, and time zones. Staged in a former U.S. Post Office, their work interrogates ideas of space, redefining concepts of nearness and distance within the cyclical gesture of postal exchanges.

The show explores themes of distance and connection with meditations on memory, identity, and communication. Some artists approach this with acute intimacy, personal experience, and vulnerability, while others embrace experimentation, observation, and speculation. Artist Tamsen Williams delves into themes of loss and resilience, blending fabric with concrete and ceramic to evoke tangible and intangible aspects of grief and alienation. Sarah Hessinger uses aerial roots and soursop petals to capture the ethereal, fleeting nature of existence. Kollin Kirven's photographic portraits of her cousin challenge notions of identity, presenting the "other" as a vibrant site of transformation, and Jon McJunkin's photographic images of jockstraps expose the vulnerability of self-expression. The artists included examine the need to connect in a world that is widely separated, the resilient nature of community, and the power of the creative process.

Vantage Points was founded as an alternative art education platform by interdisciplinary artist Heidi Norton. Working online across continents, artists meet regularly to share and discuss their work, developing a community centered on reciprocal feedback and dialogue.
