Statement
Jon McJunkin is a contemporary photographer based in Chicago, IL, whose work investigates queer identity, concepts of “failure,” and societal expectations. His art employs both digital and analog techniques, creating a dialogue that intertwines personal experiences with broader cultural narratives.

Growing up in the conservative American South, McJunkin faced a challenging environment that shaped his artistic vision and approach to identity. His upbringing instilled in him a deep awareness of the struggles and triumphs associated with navigating queerness within a landscape that often feels unwelcoming. In this context, his project "Good Boy" emerges as a powerful resistance to conventional definitions of success and failure. Through this work, McJunkin invites viewers to reflect on their personal journeys toward self-acceptance and the ongoing process of self-discovery.

Moreover, the contrast between his Southern roots and his adult experiences in the Midwest plays a critical role in informing McJunkin’s perspectives on heritage and identity. His family history, particularly their connections to the FBI, adds layers of complexity and richness to his work. This backdrop highlights dualistic themes of authority and vulnerability, safety and fear, prompting audiences to ponder the intricate relationships between personal identity and societal structures.

In his artistic practice, McJunkin intentionally incorporates imperfections—such as dust, scratches, and light leaks—into his images. These elements serve as potent metaphors for the fragility of life and identity, challenging viewers to reconsider the conventional aesthetics of photography. Works like “Surface” (2022) exemplify this approach, using perceived flaws to symbolize resilience and to uncover beauty in moments often overlooked by society.

Through his lens, McJunkin captures the intricate nuances of visibility and invisibility, encouraging audiences to engage deeply with the complexities of identity. His photography emphasizes the necessity of embracing one’s true self despite societal pressures and expectations.

Ultimately, engaging with Jon McJunkin's work invites viewers to reflect on their own experiences and identities. His art serves as a poignant reminder that authenticity is essential—not just in the realm of art but in the fabric of everyday life—illuminating the raw beauty found within our imperfections and the diverse narratives that shape who we are.
